Geothermal Energy Concern over the end of nonrenewable resources has increasingly grown in the population over the recent decades. Hydrocarbons, specifically oil and gas, are being depleted rapidly. According to imeche.org, only 1.3 trillion barrels of attainable oil remain. At the current rates of consumption, that equivocates to around 2055 when oil should just about be depleted. (imeche.org, 2014) Recent advances in oilfield technology continue to push back the date of annihilation of these resources, but eventually there will be some point in time in which our oil and gas reserves become extinct. At whatever time that happens, society must be prepared to use alternatives methods to reach our energy demands. Harnessing Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy is the thermal energy stored in the Earth that is 20% due to the formation of the Earth and 80% due to decaying radioactive materials. This thermal energy radiates off of the rocks in the core, mantle, and lower crust and takes the form of heat. In fact, â€Å"the amount of heat within 10,000 meters of Earth s surface contains 50,000 times more energy than all the oil and natural gas resources in the world.† The water underneath the crust can reach temperatures of around 200 °C. This heat excites the water molecules trapped beneath the surface and causes them to move faster and spread farther apart, which is another way of saying that the water is evaporated. There are also pathways through the rock that allow this superheated steam and sometimes water (geysers) to rise up from under the crust and escape to the surface. The steam is a source of energy that costs nothing to find, and the only difficulty is figuring out an efficient method of extracting that energy.
